After years of torture, I have finally found a clinical diagnosis for my "fear of vomit!" The medical definition is as follows:
Fear of vomiting: An abnormal and persistent fear of vomiting. Sufferers of this fear experience undue anxiety even though they realize their fear is irrational. They usually are especially worried about vomiting in public and embarrassing themselves. Consequently, they often avoid office meetings, banquets, dances and other social gatherings. The anxiety produced by this phobia can cause stomach "butterflies" and nausea.
Fear of vomiting is termed "emetophobia," a word derived from the Greek word "emetos" (vomiting) and "phobos" (fear). Related English words include "emesis" (vomiting), "emetic" (that which induces vomiting, such as the syrup of ipecac used to bring up poisons) and "emetology" (the study of vomiting).
So I came across this via the radio show I listen to on the way to work in the morning (Eric & Kathy on 101.9 FM The Mix). They were talking about a news story that was something about a bride who canceled her wedding for fear of vomiting during it... she was having reoccurring dreams or something of that nature. So they mentioned there is a medical term for this fear "emetophobia" and I was like OMG! That's me!!
Granted, I am not to the point of avoiding doing things because of this fear but if I see it, hear it, smell it I'm outta there! I was not one of those people who helped their friend and held their hair or rubbed their back while they horked all over the place. I was the one to seriously run in the opposite direction. I HATE that they have added puking scenes in the movies so much too! I have friends who warn me about this if they've seen the movie before me.
I think this fear came on in my grade school years. I was always the one who had the kid in line right in front of me or behind me toss cookies - or even worse was 3rd grade when a kid actually puked ON ME. I picked up my desk and moved about four people out of the way to try to avoid it and still ended up with DEFINABLE puke on my favorite roller skate sweatshirt. Traumatic experiences I tell you... They have seriously scarred me for life.
My boss came back from a flight where the person next to him ran out of the bags and was going all over the place. This would seriously be my single worst nightmare. This is one of the reasons I always sit on the aisle - for a fast getaway if necessary!!
Well, a big thanks to that radio show for letting me know I'm not alone! There were tons of callers who called in with the same thing. One woman had never even gotten sick herself and she was in her 40's. That's impressive!! Oh and that emetophobia is the fifth most common fear! How about that?
Show us a smile.
The movie was good - but I have to say it was totally not necessary for the series. It was, to me, almost an alternate ending. Just an extension of the series finale. I actually think we could have done without it. So that said, they did have some damn funny lines in there - most belonging to Samantha. It was more of an emotional up/down than I thought it would be .. very serious moment then BAM here comes that zinger of a line.
The funniest thing about the whole movie was the crowd! We went to a matinée and the entire theater was filled with women! And most of them were all dolled up. It's totally not the usual movie theater going scene. I have to admit I didn't wear my weekend scrappy's but I didn't throw on the full "out on the town" gear. It would have been any single man's dream!!
Four of the six of us headed to Tarantino's for dinner for some post-movie discussion. The food wasn't all that but it wasn't so crowded that we were rushed off, so we had plenty of time to "girl talk."
The rest of the weekend... allergy shot, target, grocery store, dick's sporting goods, gym, etc. The weather is simply perfect and I was able to enjoy my new lounge chair on the balcony for the first time this season. I tried once before but it was super humid that day and the mosquitoes were outrageous. Part of today's purchase was a bug replant candle!! Now I'm off to do some design work for a friend who is opening a store in the fall. Bring on the creative juices!
Not much of a holiday for me... I was hoping to catch up on some sleep but that didn't really happen. It was a whirlwind of activities.
grocery store, allergy shot, pick up laptop from boss' house, IKEA, chat w/Robin, stop by office and put together new rolling storage for building plans, clean, set up new laptop for co-worker, pick up Selika and Alex, brunch at Yolk, visit wig shop to try on fun new hair styles and colors (funny!), review brand identity books, clean, chat w/Robin, laundry, lunch w/Laura, stop at Borders to get Birthday card for grandma, office visit to review paper and print samples, tan, photo processing, working on logo ideas for Laura's new store, catch up on Oprah's from the past couple of weeks, photo processing, blog
eek!
I hope yours was a little more relaxing than mine!
So I stopped in the Volkswagen dealership tonight to see the new Tiguan and maybe turn in my Touareg early for something that gets some better gas mileage... Well the Tiguan was a huge bust! It's priced from $23,000 to $34,000 and is leasing for almost $700 fully loaded. WTF? Let me say that again, WTF? I could get a Mercedes for that... no way, no deal. I didn't even bother driving it.
Does it sometimes blow your mind to think about how far we can travel in a single day? In the span of twelve hours I traveled over 1800 miles via car and plane!
So, on the last day of my trip we set out on a mini road trip to Tombstone, Arizona to check out the super cute little town. It's completely stuck in time. If you have a chance to stop in, be sure to visit the Bird Cage Theater. It's been preserved pretty much the way it was left back in the 1880's - from the bars to the wallpaper and theater curtains. It's in rough shape but is still pretty cool to see the scale of this stuff and to think about the kind of money that was being tossed around! You can check out the Flickr set for Tombstone here.
And from there we went a little further South to Bisbee, Arizona. Bisbee is a super cute little town nestled in the Mule Mountains - kind of reminded me of a European hill town with much simpler housing. It's a mining town - the mountains are so vibrant in color from the copper, gold, silver, zinc and etc. that can be mined there. We had lunch at Winchester's Restaurant in the Copper Queen Hotel. We sat on the patio and enjoyed the warm weather and cool breeze! After lunch we wandered around the cute little shops along Main Street. How cute is that? Oh and there were some great antique shops there too! (Flickr photos)
From there it was back to the airport and off to Chicago for me! Good times!
I'm simply glowing from my trip to San Antonio...
Somehow the stars aligned and the Jayhawks were able to win their third National Championship in college basketball. I have been very lucky to be able to attend the last four Final Four KU appearances and this was simply the best.
Saturday night's game against North Carolina was stunning. I was horse from the first 15 minutes of that game - KU came out for the kill. I must have had thirty text messages in the first half of that game alone! Everyone was all excited and saying Roy was getting what he deserved for leaving Kansas... I was like slow it down folks, there's a whole half of ball to go here and I've seen a Roy Williams team come back to win from a 19 point deficit. I'm not counting the chickens before they are hatched, so to speak. Sure enough they came out with a good run but the Jayhawks were able to hold it together and put the game away. I was smiling from ear to ear!
So the big question was now... will Roy Williams stay to watch the game and will he support KU? Well, the answer was yes. I think that was a very classy thing to do.
We spend the whole day in San Antonio (well after a trip to the outlet mall between Austin and San Antonio - wow that place is great!) running around and doing basketball related stuff. Looking for shirts and hats in all the little shops around the Alamo and convention center. Hitting Hoop City - that's where I got my super cool Jayhawk balloon hat!! That poor balloon maker guy stood in one spot and made Jayhawk after Jayhawk... he will probably never want to see one again in his life. And then "The Fan Experience" where I got my photo with Baby Jay, met a very cute couple from Kansas City who we chatted up for a while and then headed over to the dome for the greatest game I've had the opportunity to attend!
What's amazing is that I was able to see the first and last game of the 2007-08 season! How freakin' cool is that??
I've uploaded most of my photos from the game to my Flickr account - check it out here.
Monday night was absolutely crazy! I went through almost every emotion possible!! I knew the game was going to be good - a lot of back and forth because both teams like to run. I was OK at the half then Memphis pulled ahead a bit and KU wasn't fighting quite as hard... I was getting so nervous! I really thought it was over with about 1:40 left to play. Memphis was up, KU was fouling ... I thought no, not again. I know they want it. They want to win. This team had a hunger that I've not seen in any of the previous teams. All I can can say is thank God for missed free throws. That opened up a baby window of opportunity and KU took it. Super Mario and his miracle three point basket! OVERTIME. I thought I was going to crawl out of my skin. When KU came out and took that first shot with confidence, I knew. At that moment I knew we had it. The crowd was in the game - everyone was in the game and took Memphis down. It was a thing of beauty!
With about 48 seconds to go, the Rock Chalk chant began to fill the dome. I was screaming, jumping up and down, hugging the people on all sides of me, giving high fives, shaking, crying... OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, I must have said that twenty times. The confetti rained down on the court, the woman next to me (a UNC fan) patted me on the arm and said congratulations, I grabbed my camera to take photos and could not even focus because I was shaking with so much adrenaline. It's a moment I'll never forget.
ROCK CHALK - SO PROUD TO BE A JAYHAWK!!
Yep. It's official as of 10PM ish tonight that I am in my middle thirties. It was quite a day...
I started my day at the allergist where I was injected by 15 individual needles (the first of two sets of this) to see what I'm allergic to. Come to find out I'm mildly allergic to dust mites and fully allergic to CATS! Can you believe I'm allergic to my two babies? I just told the guy keep the drugs commin' I'm not getting rid of the kitties. No way!
I left there and headed to the Apple store to exchange something I had gotten for my iPhone and had to leave immediately from there, forgoing my other stops, because I was totally nauseous. I really thought I was going to loose it. I have no idea why I felt bad - the shots? Still don't know, but better now.
I sat on the couch eating saltines for the next few hours till it was time for the basketball games to start up. I watched Memphis win with ease and then came the KU / Davidson match up. OMG! I was on the edge of my seat, screaming and yelling and about to have a heart attack. I am SO happy for those guys - they were able to pull out the win. It's a miracle really!
Started some laundry and hit the internet to find flights, somewhere to stay and tickets to the Final Four! I've emailed everyone I know that could possibly hook me up with a pair of tickets. I checked Ebay and they are CRAZY expensive and something in me just doesn't trust Craigslist for something like this...
I NEED TICKETS!
If you're reading this and you know someone who can help a girl out, let me know! I want to be in San Antonio next weekend so bad. If I do go this would be Final Four #4 for me!!
