About once a month, I go through my posts and back up in a word doc. I've done this since about 2002, it's a good thing to get into the habit of doing.
No, not really. I think he's trying to utilize the RSS feed - just as Terri suggested. However, he's trying to create a specialized tool that'll actually take stuff you've inserted too.
Yeah, so it's text only then... no links to articles or photos.. kind of defeats the purpose. I thought about printing to PDF page by page and importing into a InDesign document or something like that.
I know it will be virtually impossible to import it to another blog engine, but I figure I'll just start over. I am thinking either wordpress or posterous. I'm loving posterous - super easy and a great community so far!
I don't want to go, but I am having a hard time with several things...
I can't mobile blog properly. I can't archive anything - I've already sunk 3 years worth of posting here and have no way to do anything with it. I hate the spam! And quite frankly I just need to streamline my online presence! I have too many things in too many places!
I do love the Vox community, but ... it just might be time.
Good question. The only way that I know of to really archive a blog is to backup the database, which I don't think you'd get access to for the Vox blog. Would be interested in what answers you get.
I hope you are planning on using Wordpress. I can't say enough about it. It's easy to install and you can host it yourself. Completely customizable and has all kinds of plugins you didn't even know existed. LOL. From what I've been able to gather... if you want to migrate you'll need to do it manually... which completely sucks but maybe you can be selective or just work backwards.... meaning, start from now and as you have time recreate the older posts in order if you really want them. It's something I never gave a second thought to when I started Vox and they don't exactly advertise that they don't let you export.
What is your wordpress blog? I actually have one set up there right now and was totally thinking about it. Not loving that I have to pay for another blog service tho. I know they have a free version, but I like to customize. ; ) Maybe I need to just let go of that ... http://yffoto.wordpress.com/ -- I am totally loving posterous (http://yffoto.posterous.com/). I currently have the same content on them because I'm trying to decide which ones to use... With posterous I can post via email to wordpress, posterous, flickr and facebook all at the same time. It's totally awesome!
I host my own on http://www.marilynnieves.com/blog. TOTALLY customizable girl. All you can do on posterous you can do on WP with it's widgets/plugins. What you have is the easy wordpress setup where you just open an account with them and they host it for you. It's the same thing as the free version except that you'd be installing it (easy peasy) on your own hosting server. So is you have a yffoto.com and it has mySQL capabilities you are set. You just need to install the app. I use mediatemple.net ($20 per month) for my hosting but there are many others that are less expensive these days with mySQL capabilities... I've actually been thinking of switching but I have several on there and they haven't pissed me off yet so I've stayed :)
See.. you're like me. Too many to keep track of!!! I'm loving your Suspended Images - still can't believe you were in Chicago and didn't let me know.. Bad Mari! ; )
Doh, I thought I replied... I switched the beginning of the year to 5D II. I didn't have a big investment in lenses, I rented most of the time. Nikon 50mm and Sigma 105 macro is what I had. All the equipment has been sold already. I do have a lensbaby 2.0 I forgot I had. You use Nikon? Do you have a lensbaby?
I shoot w/Canon ... never went the Nikon route. I do have a lensbaby, also 2.0, but haven't done much with it even though it's always in the bag. Sad! I am looking for someone that has a wide angle (either Canon or Sigma) to borrow for my Paris trip in the fall. I don't have anywhere near me that rents them (that I've found) so I'm asking all my photo friends.

There might be a way to pull it from your RSS feed:
http://ylf.vox.com/library/posts/atom.xml, but unfortunately VOX does not have a built in export feature.

What do you do about photos?

Oh and when did you switch to canon? Got any wide angle lenses?
